Job opportunities, industry experiences and potential study options were the key focuses of the 2018 Engineering and Computing Careers Evening, hosted by the Faculty, last night.
More than 230 students turned out to hear from successful UQ graduates who have started their careers working with some of the best companies in the industry.
BHP Mining Engineer George Eadie graduated from UQ in 2015 and began his career in a graduate program at BHP.
He is now in mid-term planning at Blackwater Mine.
“A degree from UQ gave me the foundations to build a successful career as a mining engineer with a leading global company,” he said.
“I’m now planning at one of the biggest mines in the Southern Hemisphere and learning from some of the best engineers in the industry.”
He was one of nine successful UQ alumni, who shared their experiences and tips to potential students last night.
Graduates now working for companies such as Boeing, Queensland Urban Utilities, STEM education, Gilmour Space Technologies, Redback Technologies, AECOM and HeliMods also presented their journeys from UQ to new exciting careers to prospective students.
While Defence Force Recruiting, Rio Tinto, Anglo American, Hatch, UQ Women in Engineering, UQ Racing, UQ Idea Hub and EAIT Employability exhibited at the event, passing on information to students interested in an exciting and fast-paced career.
Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology Executive Dean Professor Vicki Chen said there has never been a more exciting time to begin a career in engineering or computing.
“We know that technology is disrupting industry at a rapid rate, norms are being redefined and we are innovating to break the status quo,” she said.
“You’ll learn the ability to adapt and be agile, but most importantly, you’ll be able to make an impact.
“We can help you go further in every possible future.”
