Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) /Master of Engineering (Electrical and Biomedical)
Why did you choose to study at UQ?
One of the main reasons I wanted to study at UQ was because of the vast opportunities that UQ has to offer. I first visited UQ back in 2019 during open day and it was certainly an eye-opening experience. After walking around campus and talking to so many helpful people with amazing stories from UQ, I decided that this was definitely the type of place that I wanted to go to. It’s a university that not only offers the chance for students to network with people across multiple disciplines through their variety of clubs and societies, but also offers so many insightful workshops and programs to develop interpersonal and leadership skills. Not to mention the actual campus, it is just an amazing place to hang out with some friends whilst getting some food, playing some games in the Great Court or studying in the many different libraries around UQ. I’ll have to admit though, I did get lost quite a few times during open day. But it was like a little adventure which allowed me to meet so many more people, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way!
What advice do you have for prospective students interested in studying engineering, architecture, computer science and/or information technology at UQ?
As UQ offers a flexible first year for first year engineering students, I would recommend prospective students to choose that option if they are unsure about what major they would like to pursue. I was lucky enough to have my mind set on this major if I was ever to go into engineering instead of medicine. However, I believe that choosing a major that you really enjoy is the most important part of studying engineering, because one thing I found that worked for me was that I usually performed better at something that I genuinely found interesting. I know that choosing a major can be extremely stressful, so seeking advice and simply asking as many questions as possible should be the very first thing students should do.
What do you love most about your degree?
If I was to list off everything that I loved about my degree, we would be here all day. But I would have to say that one of my favourite aspects of studying an engineering degree are the team projects. These type of team projects are just something you won’t find in a lot of other degrees since most pieces of assessment are individual. Not only do you get the opportunity to do some hands-on work when building your project, but you get to make some friends along the way. My favourite part of working on a team project is the satisfaction you get when your 13 weeks of hard work comes together, and you look back to see how close of a team you all have become.
