Engineering Professional Practice
- All UQ Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering, and Master of Engineering students must complete 430 hours of Engineering Professional Practice (EPP) before they are eligible to graduate.
- A minimum of 225 hours must be completed in an engineering environment under a degree-qualified engineer.
- You can support our students by providing quality opportunities for students to gain industry experience to fulfill their Engineering Professional Practice milestone. Engineering Professional Practice can be completed at any time however is commonly fulfilled during university vacation periods.

Coursework placements/ Work Integrated Learning
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Master of Engineering (integrated program)
- Students are required to undertake a full-time 24-week placement in industry or a research institute in their fourth or fifth year.
- We work closely with our industry placement partners to define the scope of the placement and provide our partners with the opportunity to interview students to ensure the best fit for both the student and your company.
Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning and Master of Urban and Regional Planning
- This is an elective course for final-year undergraduate and post-graduate students. As part of the course, students must complete the 200 hours of professional placement, assessment activities and attend a series of workshops led by the UQ Professional Planner in Residence.
- The course is offered in Semester 1 (13 weeks), Semester 2 (13 weeks) or Summer Semester (8 Weeks).
Master of Data Science
- Students in their final year complete a capstone project which involves designing and implementing a data science solution to an industry problem.
- Spanning two semesters, the first semester involves performing an analysis of the problem and developing a proposal – approximately one day per week. The second semester involves the execution of the solution – approximately three days per week.
Master of Cyber Security
- Students in their final year complete a capstone project which involves designing and implementing a cybersecurity solution to an industry problem.
- Spanning two semesters, the first semester involves performing an analysis of the problem and developing a proposal – approximately one day per week. The second semester involves the execution of the solution – approximately three days per week.
Master of Engineering (Urban Water Engineering)
- Students are required to undertake a full-time 24-week placement in industry or a research institute in their final year

Work experience
Work experience
- Not all students are required to undertake mandatory placements as part of their programs, such as Bachelor of Architectural Design, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, and Bachelor of Information Technology. However, many students are interested in gaining industry work experience during their degree.
- Students should be paid for the work they perform unless the work experience meets the criteria for unpaid work experience as per the Fair Work Act 2009.
- UQ will provide insurance for approved unpaid work experience up to 30 days per calendar year.

- Any UQ Student is covered by UQ insurance while undertaking UQ-authorised activities including Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and work experience.
- Students undertaking WIL or Work Experience opportunities authorised by UQ are covered by the following insurance:
