Master of Data Science
To enrol in DATA7901 with an industry project, you must follow our six-step process below.
Master of Data Science can choose to complete either a research or industry project for their capstone course. For those students wanting to submit an industry project, they must follow the below six step process below:
Step 2: Register your interest in the course
Let us know in advance that you're planning to enrol in DATA7901 with an industry capstone project. Industry capstone projects for this course are managed through UQ's placement management system, InPlace. To enrol in DATA7901 you must first register your intention to enrol via InPlace. Details on how to register your intention are outlined below:
- Log in to InPlace using your student username and password (UQ single sign on).
- If this is your first time logging in, you will need to accept the InPlace terms and conditions.
- Navigate to 'My Details' via your username at the top right of the screen.
- Update your personal details - mobile number, emergency contact.
- Scroll down to the section DS Industry Capstone Registration'.
- Select the semester in which you plan to enrol.
You must submit an EOI to gain access to the InPlace Self Placement submission portal for the relevant course, year, and semester. The self placement submission portals open and close on the following dates:

Note: You won't be able to enrol in your course on mySI-net until we've confirmed your capstone project in InPlace (see step 6).
Step 3: Find an industry capstone project
Industry capstone projects for DATA7901 are student self-sourced. For information on self-sourcing your capstone project view our Self-Source guide. In addition, we have provided some tips to self-sourcing your project below:
- Research organisations that you aspire to work with when you graduate and connect with alumni from your program on LinkedIn.
- Take advantage of the career development resources available on the EAIT Employability website to help you write your application and prepare for interviews.
- Complete EAIT Career Kickstarter Program
- Utilise EAIT’s free resume feedback tool – VMock
- Apply to the host organisations you've identified, long before you plan to enrol in the capstone course.
Some organisations:
- Advertise student employment, vacation work or scholarships
- Have a structured industry placement program in place
- May be interested in hosting a student but not actively advertising positions.
Potential host organisations
Research organisations with which you'd like to undertake your industry capstone project or that you aspire to work with when you graduate. Types of organisations that might interest you:
- Consultancies
- Non-profit or non-government organisations
- Government
- Industry
- Research facilities

Step 4: Apply to enrol
You'll need to complete an Industry capstone project self source application form with input from your supervisor at your host organisation. You can download the form from the Shared Documents Tab via InPlace.
You must submit your completed application on the InPlace portal. Make sure you've completed step 2 above to gain access to the correct portal for your course, year and semester.
You must submit your application to enrol in the capstone course with your industry project by the submission deadline.

We'll assess your application and refer it to the Course Coordinator for approval.
Once it's approved, you'll receive an email confirmation from EAIT Employability.
Step 5: Complete your pre-enrolment requirements
Before you can enrol in your course with your industry capstone project, you will need to satisfy all relevant pre-enrolment requirements.
Mandatory requirements
5 in 5 OHS module.
Students must complete the 5 in 5 Module prior to commencing their industry capstone.
The 5 in 5 modules can be accessed here.
The course consists of 5 modules covering key OHS topics:
- Induction
- Occupational Violence
- Travel
- Specific Workplace Hazards
- Personal Safety
At the end of each Module, you will complete a Knowledge Check of five questions to confirm your understanding of the Module. Each combined Module/Knowledge Check should take no longer than five minutes, and you must achieve 100% on all five Knowledge Checks to be 'compliant' with this requirement.
Other requirements
You may also be required to:
- Provide proof of your immunisations (if your host organisation has mandatory requirements)
- Register your travel details through either the EAIT Domestic Travel Form or EAIT International Travel Form (if your industry capstone requires you to travel away from your normal residence during the semester) Student immunisation requirements
- Obtain a Blue Card (if your industry capstone involves working with children)
- Provide evidence of a criminal history check (if required by your host organisation.)
Once your industry capstone is confirmed, you'll be advised if you must satisfy any other requirements.
Step 6: Enrol and attend the mandatory workshop
When we've confirmed your industry capstone in InPlace and you've satisfied all your pre-enrolment requirements, we'll give you permission to enrol in your capstone course on mySI-net.
For most courses, you'll attend a mandatory workshop before you can commence your industry capstone. EAIT Employability will communicate with you if this is required and provide further detail.
Additional course information
The capstone project will focus on tackling a data science problem sourced from science, government or industry. Capstone projects can be research oriented or development oriented. Specifically, the course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform the design section of a data science project. This involves a precise problem formulation and effective communication with the project associates such as clients, managers, and investors.
Students who are interested in an industry capstone project are required to follow the 6 steps outlined above.
Please note, an industry capstone project is not mandatory and there will also be research projects available for this course.

Duration of your capstone project
You will spend one (1) day per week on average working on the industry project DATA7901 and three (3) days per week on average for DATA7902. The location and type of contact hours will be defined by your host supervisor. Standard business hours are typically eight (8) hours per day but your host supervisor will discuss expected hours with you.
UQ Assessment
- You are required to submit a number of assessment items during your capstone project. For full details of the course assessment, refer to the course profile on UQ Blackboard.
- You will also need to prepare and deliver a final oral presentation when you return from your capstone project. If your project is remote or overseas your final presentation may be delivered using video conferencing technology.
- Your assessment items will be marked by your UQ academic supervisor or the course coordinator and your final report will be marked by at least one other examiner.
- If you have any difficulties completing any of the assessment items by the due date, ensure that you let the course coordinator know as early as possible.

- Design technically feasible data science solutions with consideration of ethical and legal aspects, and identify appropriate data science technique (techniques) to a practical problem.
- Apply project design and scoping techniques to write a detailed project proposal suitable for professionals and stakeholders.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
- Synthesise information from a variety of sources to develop informed solutions.
- Implement a data science approach to solving a problem within a given application context.
- Apply, optimise and evaluate appropriate data science techniques to a practical problem, taking into account ethical and legal aspects.
- Present project outcomes in a coherent manner with compelling arguments and appropriate use of visual aids and digital technology.
- Write a technical project report that clearly describes the problem, motivation, methodology and findings, with justifications where necessary.
