Edo / Tokyo: Contemporary City

Calling all students of Bachelor of Architectural Design with a passion for historical architecture in contemporary contexts. Join this unique study tour to spend two weeks learning research methods suitable for architecture and art history contexts in one of the most unique environments in the world: Tokyo.

This exciting opportunity will see you travelling to Tokyo, visiting architectural and urban projects, art institutions and private galleries. The tour includes day trips to cities such as Kamakura and Yokohama, and involves visits to innovative contemporary projects and a range of vernacular projects and historic sites run with parallel visits to art and architecture museums. Participants will also complete ARCH3342, earning 2 units toward their degree.

Supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's New Colombo Plan (NCP), the program will support up to 18 students who are enrolled in a Bachelor of Architecture to participate in the two-week program based in Tokyo.

The NCP is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake study in the region.

The project is delivered in partnership with, and builds on UQ’s links with Tokyo Metropolitan University.

Selected students will each be offered a mobility grant of AU$3,000 to support costs, including flights, program fees, and incidental expenses. Please see more information in the ‘Costs’ section below.
